INTERNATIONAL EDITION: Europe - Day 8

These shoes were made for walking.. a lot!

Brandenburg Gate
Following a full breakfast we put on our walking shoes for a full day of exploring around Berlin.
The first walking tour covered a high level history run through of Berlin's dark and troubled past.

The tour made me realise how young Berlin is as a capital with most of the buildings being rebuilt since the fall of the Berlin wall back in November 9, 1989. So technically, Berlin is 27 years young.

Some of the highlights of the walking tour included:
  • Brandenburg Gate
  • Reichstag building
  • Memorial of the murdered Jews of Europe
  • Führerbunker, Hitler's air raid bunker - which is now a car park
After the walking tour we made our way to the Ritter Sport flagship chocolate store and went all out, stocking up on chocolate!
East Side Gallery

A few of us headed upstairs to the Ritter Sport cafe to have lunch and rest our feet. After lunch we continued on with some more sightseeing walking down to Checkpoint Charlie and spending the rest of the afternoon exploring the Topography of Terror museum.

In the afternoon the group met up for our next tour of the East Side Gallery. I think most of us were tired from the morning tour and it was getting cold and close to dinner time so we weren't so keen on the second walking tour but we powered on counting down to dinner time.

Our tour guide walked us through the neighbourhoods along the East Side Gallery providing us with an insight into the arty side of Berlin with large murals spray painted on the sides of buildings and his interpretation.

Best Chicken Schnitzel ever!
Soon after it was dinner at Scheers Schnitzel, a very small restaurant under what seemed to be a bridge.
The restaurant has a raw, grunge vibe where visitors have their their mark signing off on the walls. Don't let the decor fool you as the food was amazing! The only thing available to order was chicken schnitzel which was amazing and definitely hands down the best schnitty I have had in my life!

It was served on a paper plate with a side of sauerkraut, creamed potato salad and some greens. The schnitzel had the perfect coat of crumb and mouthwateringly juicy on the inside.

After dinner we headed to a bar across the street, had some dessert and a round of beers for the table before calling it a night and hopping onto a train towards our hotel.

Time to re-pack the bags as tomorrow we head to Prague!
Jen xoxo
