INTERNATIONAL EDITION: Europe - Day 5

YOLO .. hello Europe!
Leaving Dover to Calais

Today is the day I set off to Europe for 19 days.. soo excited!
After a quick breakfast and packing I waited for the taxi I booked the night before. I waited and waited but no one turned up and thats when I started to get worried. I called up the taxi company and they denied of any online booking which was frustrating because I had a ticket number after booking online. Plan B kicked in, I gave Uber a try and success - in 4 mins a Prius came around the corner and picked me up and got me to my destination.
My AirBnB host gave me an new customer code so my ride was FREE - win!

At Russell Square I met up with some Contiki friends I met the previous night, our bags were weighed, name and passport checked and we got onto our coach to Dover where a ferry took us onto Calais, a port city in France.

The ferry ride took a good hour and we were well and truely in France however, we didn't stop in France and continued on from Calais to Amsterdam driving past the migrant camps with people living in tents hoping to make their way to England for a better life.

From the port of Calais we crossed into Amsterdam and behold the windmills were spinning amongst the happy cows, the flat, lush land and so green - a contrast to the Australian dry landscape.
Amsterdam

We checked into our hotel, a fancy 5 star Best Western hotel and following a buffet dinner made our way into town for a little cruise through the canals.

I saw the tall and skinny houses all on a slant due to foundation problems over the years which may seem normal to the locals but for me it was quirky and definitely a sight to see.

Freits & mayo - yum!
We made our way down the Red Light District and funnily enough the tour group decided to all go to a sex show which was an odd experience watching performers bonking each other with no emotion on stage.. very odd!

A bunch of us went to a "cafe" to sample the delicacies before sampling the famous freits (hot chips) with mayo afterwards and they were delicious!

Not bad for first day in Europe and looking forward to the next 18 days ahead with my tour group.

Jen xoxo
