The Jewel of the Great Ocean Road

Limestone rock and roll!

Having settled in our cosy room for the night at Parkview Motel & Apartments, Port Campbell we continued our Great Ocean Road journey to see London Bridge at sunset. We changed into warmer clothes and took a wind-stopper jacket to shield us from the strong Indian ocean gusts to which was quite odd to me as it was mid summer.
London Bridge is beautiful in person and even better at sunset.

1. London Bridge
Yes, it's just a big rock with an arch but it has dramatically changed over the years with the natural process of erosion as the violent waves crash against its limestone walls.
Spotted! The first penguin before sunset
Penguin spotting!
If your lucky enough you may come across some fairy penguins! Most of them come out at dark to look for food but we were lucky to spot one lonely penguin.

2. Loch Ard Gorge
We decided to see Loch Ard Gorge first thing in the morning at 8.30am, a little bit past sunrise but always beautiful sight.
With its sheer size slowly opening out into the deep blue ocean funnily enough reminded me of the famous Phi Phi Island in Thailand but in this case it was only 16 degrees.

3. The 12 Apostles
The creme de la creme, the rugged splendour of the Great Ocean Road lies here at the world famous 12 Apostles.
The photos don't do justice as its magnificent rock stacks rise high above the crashing waves of the Southern Ocean forming Victoria's amazing coastline.

4. Gibson Steps
I must say my favourite destination is just a few metres following the 12 Apostles known as the Gibson Steps. This was a true highlight with its 70 metre high vertical cliff line.
Take a moment and head down the beach to be dwarfed by the amazing rock stacks Gog and MaGog.

Overall, the Grand Ocean Drive is a spectacular journey. It would have to be one of the best coastal drives I have experienced with a mix of beautiful beaches and friendly coastal towns winding deep into the Otway rainforest and finishing off at the jewel of the Grand Ocean Drive and home of the 12 Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge, London Bridge and Gibson Steps.

Take a weekend away to capture the Australia's coastal beauty, breathe in the fresh rainforest air and be amazed with the towering limestone formations of the 12 Apostles at Port Campbell.
